This to inform our patients of CPAP clinic. Patients often have questions regarding this…
CPAP clinic is for all CPAP patients to have a follow up visit to check several different things:
1) We have to keep an on going recording of your usage hours on your machine for a compliance report for your insurance company. This is why you have to always bring your machine in with you.
2) If you received your equipment from us, we issue you your new supplies such as; your mask, hose, filters, headgear, chinstrap etc...
If you received your equipment from an outside DME company; we monitor them to make sure you have received your new equipment like you are suppose to, and make sure there are no problems with your compliance of the machine. We still have to record your hours and request a smart card reading from your DME Company off your machine.
3) Every patient should have an overnight pulse oximeter ran every six months to 1 year. This is the little light you wear on your finger at home while you sleep with your mask and machine on. This lets us know if your maintaining at the pressure your suppose to be. CPAP pressure can be like any medicine you take, your bodies can acclimate to it. This is to reassure your pressure.
4) Patients are often asking me why they need a new mask and hose every six months. So I want you to imagine the back of your shower curtain after six months, even though I know you clean the mask and hose, think the only thing that runs down your curtain is soap and water. ( Think of the skim and scum that grow on the shower curtain despite the fact that water and soap are the only thing that runs down it) So now you have the wonderful image of what you are breathing. Now the next question I get is; why can’t I clean it with bleach, and do not do this because you breath those fumes straight in; so imagine standing in your shower cleaning that curtain with bleach how hard it is to breath and how it burns, this is also what its doing to your respiratory system even after its been flushed. It can also damage the material of the mask and hose.
5) Now that every one has a good idea of how important it is to keep your appointment every six months, I will let you know insurance has approved you to receive new mask every three months and a new hose every month. If you would like a different mask or a new hose before your schedule 6 month follow up date please call, we will be happy to try to have it on hand for you. However we do not require this, we will leave our follow up appointments at six month increments this is when it has been scientifically proven to need change out of equipment.
